Survivor Tocantin: Week 1 "The Hag or the Nag?"
Impressions from the first episode:
1. Sandy seems really annoying. She was immediately targeted for being the oldest woman on her tribe, and seems to have used her many years accumulating annoying personality quirks rather than intuitive wisdom. My least favorite thing about her is that she makes this moaning, half-crying sound every time she gets excited about something. Also: Will someone please tell her what a pace is so that she can find the damn immunity idol? I'm sure that, to her Alabaman ears, the closest thing she can think of is a "pace of pie," and that's not going to do her any good in the Brazilian highlands.
2. Sierra is likable enough, but isn't the best at sticking to her plan. She interviewed in the beginning of the show that she was going to do her best to hide her strep throat from her tribe. This scheme lasted until about five minutes after she was allowed to talk to her tribemates, when she spilled the beans to everyone.
3. Benjamin identified himself as a tool right away by telling Joe that he wanted to form a coalition based on, essentially, physical strength and toughness. He wants us to understand that this is based entirely on honor and courage, and has nothing to do with the fact that he happens to be one of the strongest members on his team.
4. Timbira came back from a deficit in the challenge to win when Jalapao's 19 year old Spencer and beauty queen Sydney completely blew the puzzle portion. Luckily for them, the focus wasn't on them at tribal council.
5. Tiny Carolina managed to catapult herself into everyone's disfavor by haranguing her tribemates about their inability to complete projects to her satisfaction. Taj tried to give her a mature and friendly warning, but it didn't curb Carolina's behaviour enough, if at all. Her baby-talk voice and inability to pitch in physically at the challenge didn't help her any. So, Jalapao blindsided her, a move that was all the more satisfying in light of the fact that she kept fake-apologizing to Sandy about the fact that they were all about to vote Sandy off.
6. I believe that Jeff Probst said that these individual immunity idols are only good the first time the respective tribes go to tribal council. So I think Sandra's chance at immunity may now be gone for good, but Sierra's (unfound idol) will still be "live" until Timbira goes to tribal council.
Go North, Carolina! Like, all the way out of Brazil and back to the US of A.
So what does that mean for the pool?
Standings
The six players who correctly predicted Timbira's immunity win gained 6 bonus points. Since I didn't ask for this prediction separately, I based this on who you thought was going home first. So, if your first predicted bootee was on Jalapao, you therefore predicted that Jalapao would lose immunity, and won the bonus points.
Aside from that, the question becomes: Who knew Carolina sucked before watching the episode?
1st: Paul 111 (+5 +6)
2nd: Stats 102 (-4 +6)
3rd: Carl: 99 (-9 +6)
4th: Mike 97 (-11 +6)
5th: Kim 95 (-5 +0)
6th: Mom 95 (-8 +6)
7th: Brian 91 (-9 +0)
8th: Matt 91 (-13 +6)
9th: Dawn 89 (-14 +0)
As you can see, Paul got off to a rocking start, bolstered by a perfect immunity/boot prediction combination. Dawn, Brian and I ate it pretty bad, having each put too much faith in Carolina.
In future weeks, please send me the name of the tribe that you think will win immunity.
