Hurricane?

Hurricane Kyle was supposed to have blown through Maine, but it turned out to be much ado about nothing (although I understand Canada might still be in for it).

For us, the hurricane manifested as three days of warm rain during what is usually a cool, dry season. Maybe the warmth will stretch out the fall foliage a bit; the colors are pretty amazing right now.

The garden held up well under the rain, with the exception of the tomatoes. They continue to rot on the vine. Every day I pick tomatoes up off of the ground, and feel a pang of regret that my most numerous crop is largely inedible.

At least there's one thing I'm harvesting from the tomatoes-- the clean, green smell of the tomato vines themselves. The smell of a tomato plant is one of my favorite smells in the world, and I've had ample opportunity to indulge that particular preference.

The pumpkins are going strong, bulking up and coloring up. I wouldn't say that they're on track to be as large as the ideal carving pumpkins you see on Halloween, but they might be just good enough to serve. The powdery mildew has all but consumed the leaves, but the pumpkins are hanging in there.
